The
Lafayette Soiree is an annual fundraiser for the Verdier House
that commemorates the visit of the Marquis de Lafayette to Beaufort
in 1826. It is held outdoors in late April. Anecdotal evidence indicates
Lafayette spoke to the people of Beaufort from the portico of the
Verdier House before being received at a formal reception at William
Elliott's home at 1103 Bay Street. The Soiree features excellent
food, silent and live auctions and music.
The
Annual Oyster Roast, held in late January on the banks of the
Beaufort River, is HBF's 1st annual membership drive. In this traditional
Lowcountry experience, steaming hot oysters roasted over open fires,
hot soup and beverages are served to hundreds who are dressed for
Beaufort¹s coldest days. Bonfires, music, food and drink combine
to attract new members and old.
Connoisseurs
Days feature day trips to other historic sites and are sponsored
in the Spring. ÊSmall groups travel by van or small bus and enjoyed
guided tours and special meals in special settings. Some of the
excursions have included St.Simon's Island, Savannah's homes and
private gardens and private homes in Charleston and Natchez, MS.
Docent
Day is set aside in late winter for the entire docent corps
to travel together to other historic sites to see how they are interpreted.
It is HBF's annual thank-you to the docents who volunteer in the
Verdier House and at the Beaufort Museum year-round.
